What is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a device that measures your heart activity using electrodes attached to your chest. It is worn 24 hours a day for one to three days. During this time, the Holter monitor measures and records your heart rhythm for your cardiologist to examine at a later date. While you are wearing the monitor, it should not be removed or gotten wet, so you will not be able to bathe. You will also be asked to keep a record of your activities so that your heart rate and rhythm can be matched to your level of activity or stress after the test. The recording device can be easily worn on a belt or strap for convenience. Once the duration of the test is over, your doctor will remove the electrodes and examine the data to diagnose your condition.
