A Look at the Coronary Intervention Surgical Methods Available for Coronary Artery Disease

Atherosclerosis

Coronary artery disease, also known as coronary heart disease, occurs when plaque builds up within the coronary arteries and impedes blood flow to the heart. These plaques may also harden or rupture over time, forming a large blood clot that completely blocks blood flow and results in a heart attack. If you are suffering from coronary artery disease, your Glendale cardiologist may recommend interventional surgery. Continue reading for more information about the coronary intervention surgery methods offered by Cardiac Solutions.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
A percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI is a minimally invasive procedure in which a thin, flexible catheter and balloon device are threaded through a blood vessel and into the affected artery. After insertion in the blocked or narrowed artery, the balloon is inflated in order to compress the plaque against the arterial walls and restore blood flow. A stent or small mesh tube may also be placed during the procedure to help prevent future narrowing and blockages within the coronary arteries.

Percutaneous Catheter Angiogram
Another surgical option for individuals suffering from coronary artery disease is a percutaneous catheter angiogram, sometimes referred to as a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty or PTCA. The procedure is typically performed in the same way as a PCI procedure, in that it uses a flexible catheter to guide and insert a balloon device into the narrowed artery. However, unlike percutaneous coronary intervention procedures, PTCA usually does not involve the use of a stent or mesh device.

The best way to determine if you can benefit from one of these interventional procedures is to consult with your Phoenix or Glendale heart clinic.
