Understanding Healthy Cholesterol Levels [INFOGRAPHIC]

The American Heart Association recommends a fasting lipoprotein profile—or cholesterol test—once every five years for adults over the age of 20. If your doctor tells you that you need to improve your cholesterol levels, follow his or her recommendations carefully. Cardiologists treat many people who suffer from the results of bad cholesterol levels, such as heart attack, stroke, and heart disease. To avoid these complications, cardiologists recommend aiming for a total cholesterol level of less than 200 mg/dL, an HDL cholesterol level (the good kind) of 60 mg/dL or higher, and an LDL cholesterol level (the bad kind) of less than 100 mg/dL. Your cardiologist might place you on a special diet to improve your cholesterol levels, and he or she might also recommend medication, regular exercise, and maintenance of a healthy weight.
