Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Blood Pressure

Running Seniors

High blood pressure puts excess stress on your heart and cardiovascular system, increasing your risk of heart attack or stroke. As an adult, you should have your blood pressure checked once every two years. Taking steps to maintain a healthy blood pressure will promote excellent heart health throughout your life.

Maintain a Healthy Weight
Excess weight is a significant risk factor in the development of high blood pressure. Body mass index measures the ratio of muscle to fat in the body and can be a helpful tool in determining how your weight affects your heart health. Talk to your doctor about your weight and whether you need to take steps to achieve a healthier body mass index.

Eat a Healthy Diet
Diet plays an important role in the health of your body and heart. Foods that are high in saturated fats and salt should be avoided, as these factors have been linked with high blood pressure. Include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean meats in your diet. Choose dairy products that are low in fat and select whole wheat breads over white or processed grains. Minimize the amount of trans fats you eat by carefully reading the packaging on any cookies or snack foods before you buy them.

Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise holds many benefits for your cardiovascular system. Physicians recommend getting two to three hours of moderate aerobic activity each week to help maintain a healthy blood pressure. Moderate activities include walking briskly, doing yardwork, dancing, or bicycling on flat terrain. You can also choose more vigorous activities, such as running, swimming laps, jumping rope, and participating in a vigorous exercise class. One to two hours of vigorous activity each week is equivalent to two to three hours of more moderate exercise.
