A Look at Heart Valve Problems

There are several types of heart valve problems. Most often, a doctor will note the presence of a murmur, which is an abnormal sound that is detectable with a stethoscope. Sometimes, a murmur may indicate a heart valve problem such as stenosis, which refers to the narrowing of the valve. This inhibits proper blood flow.

Another type of heart valve problem is regurgitation, which occurs when the valves do not prevent the blood from flowing backward into the heart’s chamber. Prolapse occurs when a valve has leaflets that do not close properly and atresia occurs when a valve is either missing or malformed. Fortunately, cardiologists can offer a range of treatment options for heart valve problems to help you live a long, healthy life. These treatment options may include medications or surgery to repair or replace the valve.
