What Is Enhanced External Counterpulsation?

Enhanced external counterpulsation is a non-invasive, outpatient treatment designed to relieve or eliminate angina . Enhanced external counterpulsation works by stimulating the opening of new pathways around arteries that have become narrowed or blocked. If you have chronic stable angina and are not receiving adequate relief from your symptoms by taking nitrates, ask your cardiologist if you may be a good candidate for enhanced external counterpulsation. This procedure is also recommended for patients who are not ideal candidates for invasive procedures. Since this procedure is minimally invasive, it carries fewer risks than traditional open heart surgery and doesn’t require a long recovery time.
